Lakeside Holiday Chalet Hourtin Port
The Aquitaine/Dordogne region of France has been enchanting travellers since times long past. Our lakeside holiday chalet lies close to lake and sea beaches, delightful small villages and the grand Médoc Chateaux.
Activities
Almost too many to mention!
Watersports, cycling, tennis, horse-riding and a Skate Park are all in Hourtin Port and you can fish for your dinner in Lake Hourtin. Quad biking and adventure parks are just a little further away.
Facing our holiday chalet is the Île aux Enfants- 10 hectares for play and adventure- with a wooden castle for children to explore and organised activities for them to enjoy during the school holidays.
In summer you can take introductory sailing or windsurfing lessons at Hourtin Port- very reasonably priced.
There are many local activities in nearby villages and resorts- visits from the Circus, travelling performers, music and dancing. Introductions to different, sometimes unusual, sports are often organised for children.
Near to Lacanau is one of the finest golf courses in Europe-Médoc Golf club with two 18 hole courses and a top class hotel with Spa.
Beaches
The nearest Atlantic beach is Hourtin Plage with huge expanses of sand, surf schools, restaurants and shops.
To the south Carcans Plage and Lacanau (holds world surfing events) are well worth a visit .
In addition to Hourtin Port's sandy beaches there are other lovely lake beaches. Piqueyrot, just across the lake also has a sailing school. A little further are Maubuisson at the southern end of Lake Hourtin and La Moutchic at the northern end of Lake Lacanau.
To the north the delightful little resort of Soulac-sur -Mer has a promenade and a lovely range of shops and restaurants.
A 20 minute ferry crossing from Le Verdon takes you to the larger resort of Royan- with a zoo, casino and many other attractions.
Hourtin Village
Just 5 minutes by car is a small friendly community built around a classic village square.
It has a variety of shops - butchers, bakers,wine caves,small supermarkets, newspapers and a Post Office, ATM's, garage, Museum of the Railway as well as a lively weekly market (twice weekly in summer). Buy excellent oysters from the square on Sunday mornings!
Bikes can be hired and fishing permits bought here as well as at Hourtin Port.

Larger supermarkets are in Lesparre-Médoc, 15 minutes drive.
Bay of Arcachon, Les Landes & the Dunes of Pyla
The Bay of Arcachon is not only a stunning a nature reserve, but it produces some seriously delicious oysters. For anyone who loves oysters, this is a must during your holiday. Near the Bay of Biscay and Biarritz is the Landes Forest with great trails and a forest line that abuts lovely sandy beaches. The area around the Dunes of Pyla is well-known for watersports like kitesurfing and windsurfing, whilst the dunes themselves are truly an impresssive sight and a challenge to climb!
Bordeaux and the Médoc Vineyards
Who has not heard of Bordeaux? Its vines are ancient, providing complex and delicate bouquets for the palate. The Bordeaux wines have put France on the map as an international powerhouse, if not international leader of fine wine production. Boasting names such as Chateau Margaux, Rothschild and Chateau Lafite, Bordeaux is the premier wine tasting destination in the world! Do be sure to visit the smaller boutique vineyards offering brilliant wines in the classical French style.
The city of Bordeaux
Largest city of the region and around an hour's drive or take a fast bus from the airport where there is plenty of parking. A very easy city to explore on foot Bordeaux is full of charm with its many historic buildings and the newly restored customs warehouses along the River Garonne which offer a diversity of cuisine and shopping. The Sunday flea market at St. Michel is worth a visit for bargain hunting as well as enjoying the fascinating antique arcades which surround the square.
Further Afield
The neighbouring Dordogne region of France is also called Perigord. One of the region’s biggest tourist draws is the beautiful and vast Dordogne River Valley. A cruise on the river is a treat to any holidaymaker.
Aquitaine/Dordogne also has part of the Basque country within her borders, as well as, the sought after beach and surf spot; Biarritz.
